Christ will appear three times...

It was the 28th of November in 1946 and the miner Johan Olofsson worked, as usual, with ore loading at a 107-meters depth. He triggered the last charge just before midnight and finished his shift. A few hours later – more specifically around 5 am – Albert Jönsson began his shift and took over Johan Olofsson’s work. The dust had settled after the blast and Albert was surprised by what he saw.

On the mountain wall in front of him a picture of Christ had emerged, shaped from the rock face’s silvery white sericite quartz against the darker chlorite quartzite. Albert fetched his colleague to confirm what he was seeing. The news spread like a wildfire and the newspaper Norra Västerbotten published the image in the newspaper. People rushed to Kristineberg to descend to the 120-meter level and climb 13 meters up on a vertical iron ladder to admire the figure.

The prophecy made no mention of when, but Christ would appear three times before Judgment Day.

The image faded and the room was eventually filled with gravel, but the event was not forgotten, and it matched a prophecy that a woman from Vilhelmina had told in the late 19oos. The prophecy stated that Christ would appear and that there was a land where the image of Christ was buried in the earth’s interior. The prophecy made no mention of when, but Christ would appear three times before Judgment Day. The event in Kristineberg was the first.

In the mining community Kristineberg – whose name does not relate to this event but was named after the newcomer Karl Hultdin’s wife Kristina – life and work in the mine continued as usual. Until 1968, when a marble slab from Konsum in Kristineberg was turned over and a dark figure of Christ appeared against a white background. Christ had appeared a second time…
